October 6th 2017 is World College Radio Day, a day to improve international cooperation among college radio stations and to facilitate access and disseminate information, non mainstream music and to give voice to young people.
A special occasion to draw attention to the uniqueness of this medium: university, college, campus, student radio is a huge and amazing world, populated mainly by young fired-up spirits, balancing between innovation and experimentation, in a safe environment that lets creativity to be the motivation for the upcoming generations of radio professionals.
It is the only free live medium brave enough to play unsigned, local, and independent artists on a regular basis, something that turns into a fundamental part of the media landscape because of its unique and fearless programming. WCRD celebrates also the contribution of young people as creators of innovative contents and new communication systems that make borders disappear.
This year World College Radio Day is hosted by K103 Göteborgs Studentradio and is focusing on how new media – and expecially college radio – should communicate social, political and economical changes. “Is this the end of the world as we know it?” is the theme of the 2017 edition, meaning that university, college, campus, student radio should see themselves as positive agents of change who have the responsibility to foster social inclusion, freedom of expression and tolerance. Moreover college radio should be recognized as a powerful instrument for spreading democracy, peace, knowledge and social inclusion.
World College Radio Day (WCRD), the world wide streaming marathon that has involved in its previous editions more that 400 college and student radios across the world is getting closer. Among the celebrities taking part in the global marathon there have been Sean Lennon, Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, The Lumineers’ Jeremiah Fraites, Grace Potter, Alanis Morissette and more.
